Journals
The basic mechanism is simple: keep a series of timestamped notes. An internal blog or similar tool can work, but a simple document with reverse-chronological sections is fine.
How Often
Section titled “How Often”I prefer daily entries, or at least a few per week. Taking a bit of time to collect thoughts and observations has been valuable. With teams, you can have a dedicated scribe or rotate the responsibility. It’s overhead, but I’ve found it worth the effort.
Content
Section titled “Content”Don’t try to capture everything. You might focus on Stand-Ups, interesting Slack threads, support issues. Your criteria can change over time. As with many of my practices, the Goldilocks Principle applies.
Curation
Section titled “Curation”Depending on resources, you might mine journals and organize them. Mileage varies, and I suggest not worrying too much about it. But I would review journals weekly, if only for fifteen minutes. Journal content can make a Week in Review much easier.
